e-RUPI is India’s new step towards cashless and contactless payments, a person as well as a purpose-specific digital payment system. Developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) working jointly with the Department of Financial Services, the National Health Authority, and the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, it’s a revolutionary initiative in the digital payments ecosystem. It’s expected that the initiative makes direct benefit transfer (DBT) more transparent, purposeful, and effective.
Built on the UPI platform, e-RUPI is a prepaid, voucher-based payment system that will promote cashless transactions in government benefit transfers like health-related payments. In addition, it will help in ensuring leak-free and timely delivery of welfare services. e-RUPI can be worked for commercial and private purposes also.
As this is a major national initiative by NPCI, it has partnered with various banks and institutions for e-RUPI transactions.
It is a contactless and cashless voucher-based digital payment instrument, which is prepaid in nature. Based on a QR code or SMS string, the e-Voucher is delivered to the mobile of the beneficiaries for specific purposes or transactions by partnering institutions like the government, banks, or organisations. Users will be able to redeem the voucher at the service provider without a digital payment app, card, or internet banking access.
What are the benefits of e-RUPI for consumers?
e-RUPI ensures an easy two-step redemption process and no personal details will be shared. It ensures safe, secure, and timely payments without the need for a digital payment app or bank account. Contactless and cashless, users need not carry the voucher in printed form.
With this new initiative, India’s marching towards a better, transparent, and more effective digital payments system that is relatively faster and more reliable.
